Why Choose Engineered Wood Fiber For Your Playground

Sep 30, 2020

Our Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) is specifically manufactured for playground safety surfacing, making it easy for kids and families to enjoy playgrounds by reducing the chance of injury. Made into chips from recycled hard and softwoods, the size and consistency of the material allows it to knit together and form a padded, uniform surface. Along with reducing the force and impact of a fall, the knitted surface also limits splinters and makes it easy to clean if any hazardous objects such as broken glass enter the play area.

Read on to learn why Marks Lumber’s EWF is the ideal material for your next playground project.

Extensive Safety Certification

Marks Lumber goes the extra mile to ensure the safety of its products. That’s why we put our EWF through extensive testing in order to be certified by the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA).

This certification assures cities, schools and other EWF customers that our product passes the standards required to promote safety on playgrounds when used properly. Marks Lumber’s EWF is tested each year to ensure that it meets the ASTM 2075 for size standards and ASTM 1292 for impact attenuation during a fall of up to 12 feet in height. We regularly post our test results on our website so you can see how our product performed in order to achieve these certifications.

Our EWF is also completely natural without any chemical treatment, so if a child accidentally (or not so accidentally) consumes it, you won’t have to worry about chemical substances entering their body.

Easy to Maintain

Marks Lumber’s EWF is manufactured to last the life of the playground, making it nearly maintenance-free. At most, you’ll need to maintain its depth with intermittent top-offs and occasionally raking the surface. To ensure easy maintenance and longevity of the EWF, it is important to make sure that there is a proper drainage system in place to ward off mold. If mold does occur, it will typically dry out on its own. You can also get rid of it by mixing high-efficiency laundry detergent with water at a 1:3 ratio and spreading it over the surface.

Sustainably Sourced

Marks Lumber prioritizes sustainably sourced timbers in general and, for EWF, logs that are leftover from the logging process. Most of these logs would have been thrown into slash piles to burn or rot away. By taking these logs and grinding them into EWF, we are recycling the logs and helping minimize the carbon footprint of forestry projects!

Marks Lumber is a trusted EWF supplier that has sold to schools and cities across Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, Utah, and North and South Dakota. Contact Marks Lumber today for more information.
