Why Choose Shiplap Siding

Dec 16, 2020

If you’re looking to boost your home’s curb appeal and increase the value of your home, shiplap siding is a simple and affordable way to go. Shiplap is a classic siding option that has been around for hundreds of years. Its notable lasting power has been attributed to both its weather-resistant capabilities and its classic look that never goes out of style.

Our rough-cut shiplap at Marks Lumber creates a unique blend of clean, crisp lines and authentic circle sawn texture that can be used for siding, soffit, paneling, and more. Shiplap is a wonderful option for anyone looking for a traditional siding option that’s easy to install and stands the test of time. Here are some reasons to consider using it for your next project.

Easy Installation

Shiplap siding has a classic rabbeted edge, allowing the boards to fit together snugly, making for quick and easy installation. Shiplap can be installed vertically or horizontally, and the application process is relatively similar for both orientations. Boards are placed neatly together following the dado and nailed to either horizontal blocking or vertical studs, depending on what orientation you choose. The rabbeted edges allow boards to move, swell, and shrink without exposing any gaps in the siding, making them more weather-resistant.

Durability

Marks Lumber manufactures a standard shiplap, meaning there are no reveal lines where the boards come together. This creates a tight seal against the elements, helping to keep your home protected from even the most extreme temperatures. Marks Lumber’s shiplap is made out of Douglas fir, which in Montana’s cold, dry climate has excellent lasting power. With proper care and maintenance, Douglas fir shiplap can last a very long time. At Marks Lumber, we also recommend using Valhalla’s Lifetime wood treatment as a low-maintenance way to help protect against rot and extend the life of your wood siding.

Unmatched Appearance

While many people are attracted to the clean, simple look that shiplap is known for, it’s also becoming known for its versatility. As mentioned before, shiplap can be installed both vertically and horizontally, allowing you to switch orientations and create unique patterns throughout your building. Shiplap also gives you the freedom to mix widths and create a beautifully rustic blend that brings dimension and character to your home. At Marks Lumber, we manufacture a 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8 shiplap, allowing you to mix and match widths to your liking.

Environmentally Friendly

As the Siding Estimator put it, “Wood is the essence of eco-friendly siding. It is sustainable, recyclable, renewable, and comes directly from nature.” At Marks Lumber, our focus is on producing top-quality, environmentally friendly material from log to lumber. This process starts in the forest, where we use responsible logging techniques to help restore and maintain forest health, using the voluntary BMP’s as a guideline. We also take pride in our use of bio-fuels and our ability to use the whole log in our manufacturing process, leaving little to no waste behind.

Your home’s exterior design sets the tone for your entire house. Marks Lumber’s shiplap siding is the perfect choice for any home, bringing a mix of rustic charm and clean, orderly lines that can complement virtually any style.
