Three Unique Ways to Use Board and Batten Siding

Aug 11, 2021

Board and batten siding is one of the most popular wood siding options out there. It is highly versatile and works well for various types of homes, shops, barns, and exterior accents. Board and batten is a great way to add depth to your home and is an excellent choice for creating unique contrasts across your exterior siding. But, before we get into all the different ways you can use board and batten siding, let’s make sure we’re clear on what exactly it is.

What is Board and Batten Siding?

Board and batten siding is created by alternating wide boards with narrow boards, called battens. Typically, an 8-inch, 10-inch, or 12-inch board is used with a 3-inch batten to complete the look. To install, the wide boards are secured in place with space in between them. The batten is then installed over that space and a section of the wider boards.

Board and batten siding has been around for hundreds of years, and for good reason. This installation method maintains a tight seal while still allowing the wood to shrink and swell with the changing seasons. Board and batten was first used with green wood, or wood that had not been dried, because it allowed the material to shrink as it dried and aged without exposing any cracks. Because of this, board and batten can be a reasonably durable siding option as long as it is installed correctly.

Today, board and batten siding is used for both its function and its aesthetic. Here are some of the most popular ways to use this unique style of siding.

Mountain Modern Siding

When people think about board and batten siding, it is often associated with barn or farmhouse-style homes. However, board and batten is now being used to create all different kinds of beautiful homes, including those of the up-and-coming mountain modern style. This mountain modern style is known for its clean, simple look that incorporates natural materials such as wood and stone to compliment the surrounding environment. Board and batten siding is a great choice for anyone wanting to embrace this simplistic style of these homes while still creating a dynamic exterior.

Gables

One of the most popular ways to incorporate board and batt siding into your home is in the gables. Using a different material or style of material for your gables than what’s used on your siding is a simple way to add character and bring your exterior to life. A favorite look is to use the vertical board and batten in your gables and a horizontal siding of the same look for the rest of the home. This is a great way to break up the monotony of your exterior siding, creating a compelling contrast that still fits into the overall style of your home.

Alternating Bump-Outs

Much like the look of using board and batten for gables, you can also use it to add contrast to bump-outs. Using board and batten for bump-outs is a simple way to draw attention to these unique parts of your home. Additionally, board and batten creates shadow lines that make those small sections of your home appear larger and more visually appealing.

Board and batten siding is a classic siding choice that gives you many options to create a truly unique exterior. Ready to get started on your exterior siding? Contact Marks Lumber today to place an order for your circle sawn board and batt siding!
