What does it take to construct a Poolside Pergola in Clancy, Montana and install it in Kirby, Pennsylvania?

It takes hours of planning, designing, fabricating, assembling, disassembling and then a 1,971-mile road trip. That’s what the Marks Lumber Timber Frame Crew, Cody and Seth, accomplished in October 2018.

They were approached by a friend to bid on a pool house/outdoor kitchen/pavilion project. After being awarded the project, they consulted with the homeowner and contractor. They all went over design ideas, product and joinery choices. They decided on using #1 and better grade, free of heart center Douglas Fir timbers. The joinery to be used was mortise & tenon, dovetail and knife plates. A CAD (computer-aided design) software program was then used to create precision drawings. The entire job was cut to specification at the Marks Lumber sawmill. The roof system was assembled in the Marks Lumber wood shop.

After dismantling the structure, it was shipped to Pennsylvania and the Timber Frame Crew flew there two weeks later. It was a relief to everyone to see the timbers had arrived safe and undamaged.

The rain from the recent hurricanes was a major concern. The wood swelling could affect the joinery. The frame also had a lot of detail and character. There were complex joints with valleys and dovetails. However, all the pre-planning and forethought paid off. The assembly took less than a week.

It was an exciting and challenging project; the furthest on-site timber frame to date; the homeowners were thrilled with the final product; and bonus! - the Timber Frame Crew got to go dirt biking with the general contractor!
