Lumber Textures Defined

May 22, 2019

Circle Sawn, Band Sawn, S4S and Hand Hewn are four common types of lumber surface textures.

Circle Sawn is a rough texture, and a Marks Lumber specialty. It is created by the large circular blade leaving an irregular circle shape on the surface of the lumber. Marks Lumber’s flooring and shiplap have circle sawn marks.

Band Sawn is another rough-sawn texture. However, it is a more uniform pattern left by a single band saw blade. Marks Lumber’s boards generally have one side band sawn and one side circle sawn.

S4S is a planed lumber texture. The lumber is sent through a planer leaving the wood smooth on all four sides. Marks Lumber carries 1” S4S boards in pine and sometimes fir. They can be used for trim, or any application where consistent thickness is important.

Hand Hewn lumber is wood that has been cut or shaped with hard blows of a heavy cutting tool, like an ax, adze, or chisel. Marks Lumber offers custom hand-hewn materials including timbers and sidings.
