Forklift operators need to understand all aspects of performing their job in a safe and appropriate manner. This prevents possible accidents and injuries to themselves and others. The safety of our employees and customers is a priority. We currently have 5 forklifts for various jobs in the yard, mill and shop. They are used to move logs, lumber, and equipment parts.
Wednesday was forklift training/refresher course for all operators. Bob McEachern, Safety & Maintenance Manager, instructed our employees on proper operating and maintenance procedures. This included awareness of possible hazards and avoiding accidents.
Everyone plays a part in keeping Marks Lumber a safe zone and accident free. This includes our customers and visitors. Our yard can be very busy with many types of equipment, semi-truck deliveries and customer vehicles. We ask that you always stop in our office first, so our staff can radio the proper employee to assist you. All of our employees wear high visibility safety clothing which helps to easily distinguish them from any background. Be aware of your surroundings and listen for any equipment that may be around the corner or coming up or down the hill. Give the equipment plenty of room to maneuver. Each piece of equipment can have different blind spots. If you can’t see the operator, he can’t see you. Make eye contact and get acknowledgment from the operator before moving forward.
Knowledge, awareness and communication will ensure that Marks Lumber continues to be a safe zone for our employees, as well as our customers.
